Lollapalooza Remix Throwdown
The Contest.
Lollapalooza’s annual remix contest is back and offering some serious prizes and exposure for aspiring producers and DJs. Red Bull, Ableton, Sony and Dubstop are all involved, plus it’s a chance to remix one of our favorite songs by Delta Spirit, “California”.
The Sick Prizes.

Pretty crazy. The three other finalists will each get two festival passes, Ableton Live intro and $750.
The Dirty Details.

CHILDISH GAMBINO
Best known for his TV work (so far), you might know Childish Gambino by his alter-ego (or is it the other way around?) Donald Glover, actor on NBC’s Community, writer for 30 Rock and stand up comedian. But it’s his work in music that may end up making him a household name, it’s that good. Somewhere between rap and rock, Childish Gambino combines original production with sly, witty and sometimes dark lyrics that introduce a fresh, original sound to an often over saturated genre.
After finding his stage name via a Wu-Tang Clan name generator and releasing a slew of mixtapes between 2008 and 2011, Gambino put out his first LP titled Camp on November 15, 2011. An album that combines electronic beats with symphonic strings, great writing and thick bass, I’ve been telling everyone I know to pick this project up. His live show is incredible with strobe lights and a six piece band that will blow you away. Check out Childish Gambino’s video for Heartbeat and catch him at Lollapalooza 2012.
BASSNECTAR
Arguably the biggest name in bass, Lorin Ashton aka Bassnectar has been revolutionizing electronic dance music since starting to produce in 2001, long before the masses had even heard of dubstep. He describes Bassnectar as “an open-sourced musical project that is as diverse as it is heavy, as raw as it is meticulous, and as fierce as it is imaginary.” He credits his often eccentric crowds to his own varied influences that include satanic death metal and Erykah Badu. Having played world-renowned festivals such as Coachella, Lollapalooza, and Bonnaroo, as well as collaborating with heavy electronic hitters like Ellie Goulding, Diplo, and STS9, Bassnectar offers fans an intense, mind blowing live experience unparalleled by other DJs.
His spring 2011 tour sold out every date and his New Year’s Eve show hit capacity at 10,000 fans at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, TN. He’s already sold out Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado for back-to-back nights this June and has even started his own festival, appropriately titled Bass Center. While he’s known as a top face melting producer and DJ, Bassnectar is also one of the most philanthropic and generous artists. For his 2011 tour he donated $1 from every ticket, something he says he’ll do for the rest of his career, amounting to $250,000 that he distributed across three charities that fans had the opportunity to vote on. In addition to the ticket donations, Lorin also launched the AmBASSador Program which accepts devoted fans to work as volunteers at shows helping to keep audience members hydrated, safe and promote a welcoming environment. Check out Bassnectar at Lollapalooza this summer for a seriously unforgettable show and find his newest video for Ugly ft. Amp Live below.
ALABAMA SHAKES
Eight months since they debuted their four-song EP in September 2011, Alabama Shakes has accomplished more than many artists will do in their entire career. From playing CMJ in October, to receiving praise from The New York Times, then making MTV’s list of 11 artists to watch in 2012 and finally blowing away over 2,000 fans during their set at NPR’s South by Southwest showcase in Austin, this band is comprised of pure, soulful, talented musicians with masterful songwriting ability.
After forming in 2009, the southern blues/rock quartet worked on original material and cover songs to get their foot in the door, eventually leading to their first full length titled Boys & Girls, an album that peaked at number eight on the Billboard chart and number three in the UK. With an undeniably brilliant, sandpapery voice, lead singer Brittany Howard has been compared to Janis Joplin and Aretha Franklin, not bad company for being in her early twenties and just recently being able to quit her job as a postal worker.
Catch Alabama Shakes at Lollapalooza this summer and check out their video for “Hold On”, the first single off Boys & Girls.
FRANK OCEAN
Not many artists release their first mixtape and get covered by Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, and The New York Times, or be asked to appear on an album as epic as Kanye & Jay Z’s Watch The Throne. Frank Ocean isn’t many artists though. His lyrics are honest, often painfully honest and his sound is romantically smooth, aesthetically pleasing and laced with avant-garde originality.
After moving to LA and joining the infamous rap crew Odd Future in 2009, Frank released his own project Nostalgia, Ultra with no promotion and for free download on his tumblr in February of 2011. The first single Novacane, rose to number seventeen on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop chart in addition to going viral and drawing praise from music critiques across the industry along with the likes of Jay Z, Kanye West, Nas and Lupe Fiasco. Currently working on his debut solo album, check out his video for Novacane and be sure to catch him at Lollaplooza.
MADEON
Madeon is a 17-year-old electro producer wiz from Nantes, France who became an international sensation after his remix “Pop Culture” went viral on YouTube garnering over six million view in just days (it’s over 11 million now). The song, which featured thirty-nine sampled tracks all intricately put together live, propelled the young genius to superstar status in the dominating electronic dance music world. If you haven’t seen it, we’ve posted it below and you need to watch it.
When he’s not selling out clubs around the world as Madeon, he’s Hugo Leclercq, a self-described “big fan of pop music” and someone who sites Daft Punk and The Beatles as two of his greatest influences. His music perfectly blends hard pounding bass with atmospheric silky pop synths while fluctuating seamlessly between house, disco and heavy, more progressive electro. He’s played Ultra Music Festival in Miami, both weekends at Coachella this year, remixed for Deadmau5 and released the first single off his upcoming EP on his own independent label popcultur. Check him out at Lollapalooza 2012 and stream his single Icarus below.
